CUSTOM LEXAN & ACRYLIC SIGNS FAQ

Which is better acrylic or lexan?

Acrylic, with its highest surface hardness, is common type of Thermoplastics, ideal for signage projects.

Lexan, generally considered a shatterproof material, is the brand name for a Polycarbonate Resin. Lexan is both strong and durable compared to traditional glass or Acrylic.

Characteristics

First off, Acrylic is a scratch-resistant material, whereas Lexan is ideal for anybody who is looking for high impact resistant material. Acrylic and Lexan come in standard colors and are considered cost-effective materials.

Colors

Acrylic Plexiglass is available in many standard colors with frosty, milky or glossy finishes.

Lexan (Polycarbonate), on the other hand, has far more limited color choice– clear and white.

High Light Transmission

Lexan transmits light extremely well. In fact, it is believed to transmit light better than its acrylic counterparts. Lighted signs with Lexan® sign faces have both even illumination and superior optical brightness, which can enhance your sign design. It can also allow you to use less LED lights and other light sources inside your sign cabinet, which lowers your production costs. Plus, because it’s more difficult to see light sources beneath Lexan® panels, your end result is an impressive completed sign with great visibility. And, as an added benefit, Lexan® provides excellent UV resistance.

Cost

Acrylic with its lower cost – when compared to Lexan polycarbonate, makes it an appealing choice for the business institutions.

If affordability is high on your decision-making list, the polycarbonate will have to take a backseat. It is more expensive than high impact acrylic. Lexan® is more costly because, in addition to the higher impact resistance, they also offer higher light transmission and superior optical brightness. So, if price is important, go with a high impact acrylic. It costs less and has a few distinct advantages of its own.

Impact resistance

Acrylic and polycarbonate both have a remarkable level of damage resistance. Lexan has 250 times more impact resistance over glass and 50 times over Acrylic. Acrylic falls short of the strength proven by Lexan. Although acrylic is high impact, the polycarbonate is virtually shatter-proof. It’s so impenetrable that the clear version of it is often used as bulletproof glass.

Safety

For signage solutions where safety is essential, Lexan has the incomparable strength – true victor.
